I like the linux front end, but I need to run a couple of specialist windows applications that no linux equivalent exists for. I have a full official copy of Windows XP pro on CD - how easy is it to reinstall?
Do I copy the CD to a memory card?

I've done 2 - 512MB, 4GB & 1GB, 8MB
With both I used an external USB DVD Drive - the support media with the windows drivers is DVD.
Never thought about trying a memory card - you would need to make it bootable - bit of a pain.
You need SP2 Media.
I had no pain on either, just a standard xp install.
The manual has clear instructions and good instructions for optimizing, although I would not compress the drive.

That's very interesting. A friend of mine is looking at supplying a quantity of these machines to a school - RM supply them preinstalled with Windows XP BUT (stupidly) it's XP Home which isn't all that useful at all. So this is encouraging.
HOWEVER, and this is the big ask - how quick is XP once installed? Is it really really slow? Or is it actually usable?
Thanks.
Alex.

Hi Alex,
XP was very responsive on both the 512 and the 1GB. The 512MB was also loaded with Office 2007 and an AntiVirus program.
Should have stated that on the 512 I loaded XP Home, on the 1GB XP Pro.
These were both done for customers so I do not have the systems in my hand. Neither customer has complained nor called to update the RAM.
IMHO - the main difference for most users between Pro and Home is not meaningful. Pro will utilise 2 processors and can use a direct RDP connection.
Very interesting. Thanks for the feedback. If I do reinstall my EEE PC with XP Pro, I'll probably youtube my procedure for others to use. Naturally I'll post it here..
Alex.
