I have an Eee PC 701 (Surf 4G) with Xandros. I got online, and ran all the updates...

And now, there is no Web icon on my desktop, and the only way to connect to the Web is to use Updates, which does not load a browser. There is still a Mozilla folder, but no executable file; ditto for email, etc.

Until I either get a large enough flash drive or a DVD drive (which is on order), I can't restore the original system.

I read somewhere that holding F9 during boot will restore the machine to its original configuration... well, it doesn't work on my machine.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a way to fix it without restoring the system? I should have my external DVD drive in a few days.

That reset button is for when your computer locks up. Thanks for trying.

LOL well, if it works, just don't do updates!

I wish the F9 trick worked though...

I got two machines, one came with Xandros and a Xandros installation disk, the other came with Windows XP and installation disks for both XP and Xandros (this Xandros disk was a later version...). But it doesn't do any good unless you have (a) another computer and a 1+ Gb Jumpdrive or (b) an external DVD drive.

Good news... my Eee PC locked up (hit the wrong F key at bootup) and I had to use the Reset button... I thought quickly and hit F9 while this reboot was starting, and got asked if I wanted to restore factory settings... had to type "yes" and hit Enter, but it's all back now.

Yayyyyyy

Nice work Moss! Thanks for posting that handy hint here for others who find themselves in a similar predicament!
