Does anybody know if the Asus EEE PC (with the original Linux install) will work with Vodafone's USB stick 3G mobile broadband £15 a month service? I hope it does, but nobody seems to know... It's a UK service so sorry this doesn't apply to all those people surfing this in the USA.

I too would like to know this... A little bit of googling does reveal some glimmers of hope :

Interesting. Various other places seem to say that you literally just plug it in, do an Add Connection from the EEE's (default linux install) control panel, answer a few questions and it just works.
I'll see if I can borrow one from a friend before I pays my money though.

I plan to purchase the one from 3 since you can use it PayNGo and I have read several reviews saying it works very well with the EeePC. Be sure and read all the fine print before you subscribe to one of these dongles. The one from T-Mobile says you cannot use VOIP with their mobile broadband!

I wonder if they count Skype as VoIP... I assume they would. That's got to be the killer use hasn't it? LOL... /me tested Skype on my Eee the other day and was amazed. Admittedly this was over wifi...

I have now bought the vodafone package. And it works. Very well. I bought it at Bluewater Vodafone shop. They were very helpful there, and actually quite curious about seeing it work on an EEEPC. I think they were pretty impressed with how well Linux just 'made it work'.
The Huawei E220, which looks like a rounded bar of soap, on the end of a small usb cable is the one I went for, which was free. 18 month contract, £15 inc VAT per month. I plugged it in with the machine switched on, went to Networks, chose "Create New" then chose the GSM/etc option. Chose the hardware (it was showing up), chose Vodafone, UK, Contract (as opposed to pay as you go) and it just worked. And it was fast too.
I was also given the opportunity to try the Huawei 120 (the smaller USB 'pendrive' size thing) whilst I was in the shop. This was a similar story. It "just worked".
Apparently you can flash upgrade the E220 to be 7.2Mbits capable. I've not done this yet, but will report as and when I do. I also intend to take some pics/screenshots of the installation.
Impressed so far. Even on 2G it is usable.

As promised...
Hmm it only lets me add 5 attachments! I'll post the rest in a minute. They're roughly in order.

And a few more!
Note that at home (where I am writing this from) I can only get 2G coverage, which is why the network screenshot shows GPRS and not 3G. Also, it's why the light is on green, not blue. When connected at 3G the light on the dongle turns blue.
Note also that the install procedure was *identical* for the other Huawei "memory stick" size one. It just worked.
That's handy.. Thanks - what is the speed like ??
