I bought my son a Eee PC for school and he really likes it. However, I want to put some Net Nanny-like software on it to restrict access to certain undesirable sites. What is available to use and where do I get it?
Thanks.
I assume based on the forum you've posted this in that you've got a Linux based EEE.
Obviously, to start with, nothing beats good parenting. The machine is portable, so try and get your son to browse the net when he is in the room with you there.
There are not that many applications about that you install on the PC itself. Most require you to "force proxy" or even just straightforwardly proxy (although this can easily be disabled by a knowledgeable user). Does your ISP offer any content filtering service?
One other (much cheaper) alternative, if there are sites you specifically do not want him accessing, just edit the hosts file and put in entries for any sites that you don't want accessible mapping to 127.0.0.1. This will basically make those sites inaccessible.
Hope that helps?

Thank you, Alex. Yes, we have already taken the laptop away from him numerous times because he was using it downstairs away from watchful eyes. He's a good kid and wouldn't do anything...but he is a 16 year old...
I don't know if our ISP offers filtering...but that is a good try. I will look at the hosts file...but this would require me to already have a list of sites to block. I don't have a list. I wouldn't know where to start.
Thanks,
Scott

hello there
i have just been reading this months PC Advisor (i have alot of different pcs!) and it points out that in the new Firefox 3.0 there is a filtering system. I have been using firefox for ages and VERY recently got the new version (free to download just look it up on yahoo) and it has a filtering system in the control panels - parental controls.
Hope that helps
